NARRATIVE BIOSKETCH
Prof. Pier Paolo Di Fiore is Director of the Novel Diagnostics Program (formerly Molecular Medicine
Program) at the European Institute of Oncology (IEO), a leading comprehensive cancer center in
Milan. He is Full Professor of General Pathology and one of the founders of the European School of
Molecular Medicine (SEMM), which offers Ph.D. programs in Biomedicine.
Prof. Di Fiore has dedicated his scientific career to deciphering the molecular mechanisms of
cellular transformation, with particular emphasis on growth factor receptor signal transduction and
attenuation, and more recently on stem cell biology.
In recent years, Prof. Di Fiore’s work has focused on translating knowledge accumulated on
basic molecular oncology into real clinical tools for the amelioration of cancer patient management.
Prof. Di Fiore’s scientific accomplishments are widely recognized, as witnessed by his
publication of 265 papers (source: PubMed) and 24 book chapters, and over 24,900 citations of his
work (source: Scopus). He has received numerous international awards, he is an EMBO member and
a member of the Accademia dei Lincei. He sits on several international advisory boards, and is Senior
Editor of the Journal of Cell Biology and Associate Editor of Cell. He also holds numerous patents.
