Some of the INCIPIT fellows took part in FUTURO REMOTO 2018 – Ri-Generazioni held at Città della Scienza (Naples). A stand was totally devoted on Sunday, 11 November 2018, to their research activities in the frame of the EU-co-financed project.

In particular, Jwala Priyadarsini Sivaccumar (at CNR-IBB) and Yi-Shin Lee (at CNR-IGB) showed some of the competences acquired, such as RNA, DNA and Protein purification taking care to focus on the meaning of what they wanted to communicate, maintaining a positive attitude and smile, making an effective use of “Neapolitan humor”.

Maria Charalambous (CNR-IEOS) introduced  stem cell biology, engaging people in talk and discussion on stem cells' potential uses, while playing the STEMinator card game created by CÚRAM's Teachers in Residence programme."

Also Monika Krzak (CNR-IAC), presented her PhD project to general public through educational games targeted for children and scientific presentations for  young people, sharing experience and knowledge with people from various age range and educational background.

Miguel Ângelo Cardoso de Azevedo Moreira (IBB-CNR) presented a bit of his work on protein production for structural biology and on how sodium bicarbonate and acetic acid react and release rapidly carbon dioxide.

In the afternoon, Magdalena Kostrzewa (IGB-ICB) “revealed the secrets of the DNA structure and performing its extraction from strawberries and banana using common, everyday materials” while Jamal Naderi (IEOS), based on animation videos,  talked about epigenetics by giving an example of identical twins who made different life choices and experienced different environments.

Since Ali Mokhtar Mahmoud Mohamed (ICB) is interested in mitochondria, organelle in cell which control the life and death inside the cell, as it produces ATP,  the energy element, and ROS (Reactive Oxygen Species), the stress factors, he showed and shared with children an experiment on Catalase, an antioxidant enzyme. Catalase can break, one type of ROS, Hydrogen peroxide (oxygenated water) to oxygen and water. Therefore, the produced oxygen was used to create a foam with a few drops of soap. The experiment has been done by mixing oxygenated water (from Pharmacy), a little soap (super market), and yeast, the source of catalase (super market) and it resulted to be very amusing and instructive for young people.

For the Management Committee took part in the initiative, Marilena Rossano (CNR-UREI) together with Delia Graniero and Rosarita Tatè (CNR-IGB). Scientific support was also provided by the tutors Marcella Vacca and Claudia Angelini

"The Futuro Remoto is hard to forget. The most impressive thing is communicating with people. Even with different language, they still try to understand what I was saying in English. It was really good to see lots of people are interested in Science. I was very glad to join this event" – Yi-Shin Lee
