Introduction

ES cells are gaining increasing importance as a model system both in basic research, drug discovery and biomedical applications. To date, despite the advances in basic stem cell biology, the characterization of the signaling pathways and the natural modulators influencing ES cell fate remains elusive.

Up to now, molecules involved in early lineage commitment in ES cells have been identified in a highly targeted manner. The Stem Cell Fate Laboratory (SCF Lab) was started at the Institute of Genetics and Biophysics Adriano Buzzati-Traverso (IGB "ABT") with the aim to develop new tools for the identification/characterization of ES cell modulators, by the screening of large collections of either molecules (synthetic or natural) or genes (structural and regulatory).
