What is the \u201cBreast Cancer Tissues and Organoids\u201d biobank also known as BCTO Biobank?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>

\u201cBreast Cancer Tissues and Organoids\u201d deals with the collection of high-quality breast tissues from breast cancer patients. These samples are used to generate ‘organoids’ or ‘mini-tumors’ made available to researchers to give them the ability to study breast cancer samples.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Our biobank contains 22 PDO models, 50% ER+ PR+ Her2-, 41% ER+ PR+ Her2+, 4,5% ER- PR- Her2+ and 4,5% ER+ PR- Her2+. <\/span>This data will be updated every 6 months. <\/p>

Why do we need BCTO Biobank?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>

The lack of access to high-quality tissues represents a major problem for researchers to better study and understand breast cancer. In 2021, we designed the \u201cBreast Cancer Tissues and Organoids\u201d biobank, which was officially opened in July 2023.<\/p>

It is essential to compare tumor cells and tissues with healthy ones. For this reason, the BCTO Biobank also collects healthy tissues from the same breast cancer patient.<\/p>

By continuously collecting and storing breast cancer samples, we can give scientists access to the tissues they need, making research faster and more reliable and bringing greater benefits to patients with breast cancer.<\/p>

How does the BCTO Biobank work?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>

The Management Committee<\/a> of the BCTO Biobank regularly collects, processes and conserves samples from individuals affected by breast cancer, hospitalized at the Colli \u2013 Monaldi Hospital,<\/a> and willing to donate their tissues to the biobank.<\/p>

Each sample is linked to anonymized data that specifies the type and grade of the tumor, any treatments the patient has received and, in some cases, the course of the disease. Scientists from all over the world can request access to BCTO Biobank samples for their research.<\/p>

All requests are assessed by our Scientific Tissue Access<\/a> Committee to ensure that samples are used for good quality research.<\/p>

How can I donate my breast tissue?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>

Donating your breast tissue to BCTO BioBank is voluntary. If you are undergoing surgery at the Surgical Senology Unit, Azienda Ospedaliera dei Colli \u2013 Monaldi, a nurse or a volunteer patient may ask you if you are willing to donate tissue.<\/p>

They will be able to answer any questions you may have about the process.<\/p>

We are extremely grateful to everyone who gives us permission to keep a small amount of their tissue, which is not necessary for planning treatment and care.<\/p>

Giving consent to the donation of your tissues (or denying it) will not influence your care or treatment in any way and your data will remain strictly confidential.<\/p>
