In 2001 a feasibility study was carried out on 13 small villages of the Cilento National Park: Campora, Gioi Cilento, Cardile, Magliano, Moio della Civitella, Monteforte Cilento, Orria, Perito, Salento, Stio, Laurino, Valle dell'Angelo and Piaggine.

The villages were chosen as geographically isolated, a small number of surnames was present in each village and the possibility to reconstruct the genealogies because the presence of demographic data in the archives. In the feasibility study the level of endogamous marriages was assessed for the last two centuries (1800-2000).

The results showed that in each village the percentage of endogamy was high suggesting that these populations could be also genetically isolated.
Because the limited budget for the project the study has been then proceeding with the collection of genealogical, clinical and genetic data only for three out the 13  populations: Campora, Gioi and Cardile.
