Low-cost bioinformatics: how to recycle computers and set up open-source software environment

The OBiLab provides on-site courses on computational/biomolecular topics for prospective and practicing students and researchers in the life sciences. We also support courses on demand, customized for the needs of attendees.

General Program:

Computer technologies are fast evolving and powerful machines become obsolete at a very high speed nowadays. Rather than viewing this as a problem of environmental sustainability it is possible to consider obsolete machines as a resource.  Old hardware components can be collected and assembled in cheap machines for basic bioinformatics analyses, SSH connection to powerful servers and general bioinformatics teaching purposes. With this course, using hardware and transversal competencies we aim to give to participants basic knowledge on computer assembly and configuration, open-source operating system installation and software environment for bioinformatics applications.
