Dr. Alexandre Calon is the director of the Translational Research in Tumor Microenvironment laboratory (TReaTMe lab) at the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute (IMIM, Barcelona, Spain). Dr. Calon investigates the interactions between cancer cells and the tumor microenvironment during the metastatic dissemination and the adaptation/resistance to therapy in colorectal and breast cancer. His research, in partnership with clinicians, physicists, biologists and chemists, covers the study of cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) (Calon et al., Cancer Cell 2012, Nature Genetics 2015; Linares et al., Nature Communications 2023), therapy-driven immune regulation (Tauriello et al, Nature 2018; Rivas, Linares et al., Nature Communications 2022) and the development of novel therapeutic strategies (Lo Re et al., Chemical Communications 2018; Linares et al., Journal of Medicinal Chemistry 2023). His projects are directly associated with prospective patient studies/clinical trials and combine state of the art patient-derived organoids, primary stromal cells, ex vivo humanized immunocompetent models of cancer and in vivo models together with patient samples bioimaging. Dr. Calon is also leading translational projects between Spain, Germany, Switzerland and the US in collaboration with pharmaceutical companies and participated to the development of several clinical diagnostic tools.
